I got a call from the showrunner of The Athletic Show who told me they were having a hard time getting the show to sound as good as it looked. The set had already been built and dressed in a cavernous, 150-foot-long concrete loft with two-story ceilings, and five cameras covering nearly every inch of the space. Even so, I was confident we could work around the challenges.
Fully treating the room to control echo wasn’t realistic given how much of it was on camera, so the priority became maximizing signal-to-noise at the source. With overheads and dynamic mics off the table, I went with Zaxcom wireless and chose DPA 6060 lavaliers over my 4060s to maximize wardrobe compatibility, since lavs would be the primary sound source. From there, I applied a light touch of front-end processing to deliver consistent, clean tracks; streamlining audio post and helping the team hit their deadline.
Take a listen and hear the results for yourself. If you’re dealing with a tough space and want the best possible sound, give me a call.
